With an increase in popularity of electric vehicles, automakers are either developing new electric vehicles from scratch or modifying the drivetrains of existing vehicles. Popular German marque, Mercedes-Benz, has unveiled the all-new 2014 B-Class Electric Drive which, obviously, is an emission-free vehicle based on the Mercedes-Benz B-Class for the US market. The car will be launched in US during this summer. Based on the conventionally powered B-Class, the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive has been developed in collaboration with Tesla Motors. Previously, Tesla has provided the battery for the predecessor of the smart fortwo EV. And this time as well, Mercedes-Benz looked no further than the electric car pioneer. The 2014 B-Class Electric Drive is powered by Tesla drive system that consists of an electric motor capable of generating 177 hp of power and peak torque of 251 lb-ft or 340 Nm. Compared to a modern 3 liter petrol engine, the electric motor provides noticeably better acceleration and can catapult the car from 0 to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds. Club the effortless drivability with unmatched comfort and the B-Class EV becomes a brilliant emission-free vehicle. Power to the electric motor is delivered by a high performance lithium-ion battery which is placed under the floor in the “Energy Space”. To optimize the car for better range, Mercedes-Benz has limited the top speed to 100 mph and the same can return up to 85 mph, depending on the driving style. The vehicle can be charged from any domestic 240V power source in less than 2 hours. On a full charge, the vehicle can cover up to 60 miles.
As far as the features are concerned, the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive is equipped with 5.8 in color display, audio system with MP3 and AUX, a standard Becker MAP PILOT navigation system, bar-shaped LED daytime running lights, slightly retouched bumpers and much more.
