Audi is gearing up for the 2014 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) which is to be held from January 6 to 10, 2014 in Las Vegas where it plans to showcase a fascinating technology concept car. Dubbed the Audi Sport Quattro Laserlight Concept, the car is the modern avatar of the 1983 Audi Sport Quattro and packs the brand’s technological advances including user control and display interfaces, lighting technology and plug-in hybrid drive.
The coupe concept is 4,602 mm (181.18 in) long, 1,964 mm (77.32 in) wide and 1,386 mm (54.57 in) tall, and features a wheelbase of 2,784 mm (109.61 in). It will be presented in Plasma Red color that expresses power as well as emotional elegance.
Being a Quattro model the car equips the dual headlights which, as per the German giant, is the future of lighting technology as it uses a combination of matrix LED and laser light technology. The headlight elements are trapezoidal in shape with the outer one generating the low beam light using matrix LED while the inner one producing laser beam for high-beam. The laser high beam light goes twice as far (nearly 500 meters) and offers thrice the luminosity of LED high beam lights.
The interior of the car is elegant yet sporty thanks to a slender instrument panel, a line of trim beneath the windshield, folding race car shell seats, air nozzles integrated climate control, multifunction sport steering wheel, a large Audi TFT display in high-resolution and more. The multifunction steering wheel is very innovative and features two buttons which the driver can use to select the type of drive and control the Audi virtual cockpit.
The center console of the cockpit has the MMI terminal mounted on it using which the driver can control nearly all functions of the Audi Sport quattro laserlight concept. The MMI features a large round pushbutton which also serves as a touchpad and can move in four directions. The same is surrounded by four buttons - for main menu, submenus, options and going back.
Coming to the most important section now, the powertrain, the Audi Sport quattro laserlight concept equips a plug-in hybrid drive that develops a mind boggling 515 kW (700 hp), and peak torque of 800 Nm (590.05 lb-ft). All that power flows to the tires via a modified eight-speed tiptronic transmission to the quattro all wheel drivetrain. Estimated fuel consumption is 2.5 liters per 100 km which is good enough and the CO2 emission figure is 59 g/km.
The driver can switch between three different modes: EV, Hybrid and Sport. On EV mode the car runs only on the 110 kW electric motor which offers plenty of thrust. The Hybrid mode is all about optimal fuel savings and thus uses both the 560 hp TFSI combustion engine and the electric motor. The Sport mode configures the drive system for maximum power and helps the car sprint to 100 km/h from zero in 3.7 seconds with a top speed 305 km/h.
